Command & Conquer: Red Alert — The Aftermath (1997)
Command & Conquer: Red Alert — The Aftermath is the second of two expansion packs for Command & Conquer: Red Alert (1996), released in October 1997 for DOS and Windows by Virgin Interactive. Like its predecessor Counterstrike, it was developed by Westwood Studios with Intelligent Games handling the bulk of the multiplayer map design. It is not a standalone release; the base game is required. It contains no FMV cutscenes, no named characters, and no narrative frame connecting its missions. What distinguishes it from Counterstrike — and makes it the more significant of the two PC expansions in terms of lasting contribution to the series — is that its new units are genuine permanent additions to the faction rosters, available in skirmish and multiplayer as well as campaign missions.
The Aftermath adds 18 new single-player missions — 9 Allied and 9 Soviet — playable in any order with no connecting storyline, mirroring the format Counterstrike established. The more consequential addition is its unit roster. Seven new units are introduced across both factions, and unlike Counterstrike’s campaign-only modifications, these are fully integrated into the game’s build system and available outside of single-player. The Soviet additions are the Tesla Tank (the production version, distinct from the prototype that appeared in Counterstrike’s missions as a modified Radar Jammer), the Missile Submarine, the M.A.D. Tank, and the Shock Trooper. The Allied additions are the Chrono Tank, the Field Mechanic, and the Phase Transport. The expansion also includes over 100 new multiplayer maps and eight additional Frank Klepacki music tracks, extending the Red Alert soundtrack to 35 tracks total.
The Soviet unit additions are worth noting for the ROMANOV Archive’s purposes, as they represent the only substantive expansion of the Soviet faction’s hardware identity in any PC release. The Tesla Tank formalizes what Counterstrike had previewed as a prototype: a mobile platform carrying the same electrical discharge weapon as the base game’s fixed Tesla Coil defensive structure, extending that weapon from positional defense into the field. The M.A.D. Tank — Mutually Assured Destruction — is the expansion’s most doctrinally loaded unit name, invoking the Cold War strategic concept as a tactical mechanic: the tank charges up and releases a shockwave that destroys nearby vehicles and structures indiscriminately, including friendly ones. The Shock Trooper is an infantry unit armed with Tesla weaponry, immune to being crushed by enemy vehicles. The Missile Submarine adds genuine naval strike capability against land targets, addressing a gap in the base game’s Soviet naval roster. None of these units introduce narrative or characterization. They extend the faction’s mechanical identity — mass, electricity, indiscriminate destructive capacity — without adding dramatic content.
Like Counterstrike, The Aftermath has no FMV, no named Soviet or Allied characters, and no dramatic development of any kind. The missions are tactical problems without political context. The expansion is the raw material that Retaliation would subsequently organize, frame, and give a dramatic identity. The definitive version of this content is Command & Conquer: Red Alert — Retaliation (PS1, 1998), which integrates The Aftermath’s missions and units into a structured narrative campaign, adds 19 original FMV cutscenes, and introduces General Topolov and General Carville as the commanding officers who give the expansion’s tactical content a dramatic frame it never possessed on PC. For analytical treatment of this material in its fullest form, see the ROMANOV Archive entry on Retaliation.
