What if the communist revolution didn’t take root in Russia—but in America? What if the United States itself became the Soviet Union, the United Socialist States of America?
Back to the USSA is an alternate history anthology inspired by Kim Newman and Eugene Byrne’s Back in the USSA short story anthology. This collection expands the timeline, chronicling pivotal figures and moments erased or distorted in propaganda: Alphonse “Scarface” Capone climbing from immigrant gangster to Chairman of the Communist Party; Abbott and Costello turning their wordplay and slapstick into survival on the Pacific front; Henry Wallace’s doomed fight to reform a corrupt Party before being swept aside in the Alsace-Lorraine Missile Crisis.
In 1979, the Harrisburg Incident at Three Mile Island becomes the USSA’s worst headache, birthing the Harrisburg Exclusion Zone. The Party’s S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Directorate seals it off, chasing mysterious mutatants and anomalies while denying rumors of black snow, red forests, luminous rain, and men who return changed.
The anthology plunges into Operation Condor, where guerrilla wars across Latin America pit the USSA against Mexico, Canada, and Russia, and where John Rambo—haunted and betrayed—joins forces with Ernesto “Che” Guevara against the sadistic Russian Colonel Volgin. The 1980s collapse ushers in the chaos of the Commonwealth, where Travis Bickle drives headlong into the sex, drugs, and cults of Perry Farrell’s Jane’s Addiction and the martyrdom of Xiola Blue. And in the twilight of the Cold War, as statues fall and the hammer-and-sickle is toppled, a lone NASSA astronaut aboard the “Bastion of Peace” refuses to surrender communist America’s last superweapon in orbit.
Epic, satirical, and cinematic, Back to the USSA blends gangster sagas, war epics, counterculture, and sci-fi paranoia into a bold “what if” chronicle. From Capone to Rambo, from Che to Travis Bickle, this is the story of the American Dream rewritten under the red flag.
